Japan Airlines (JAL) has initiated to use AIMS (Aircraft Integrated Data System) for flight operation, aircraft and engine condition monitoring of 747s and DC-10s in 1980. The system also has been adopted in 767s and 747-400s, which have been introcduced later on. This paper describes the outline of engine condition monitoring using AIMS and application of the system on actual engine maintenance practice to show its effectiveness for engine reliability improvement.

Japan Air Lines (JAL) has been using AIDS (Aircraft Integrated Data System) for flight operation, aircraft and engine performance monitoring of 747s and DC-10s for the past 3 years. This paper describes the concept of engine performance monitoring using AIDS with particular emphasis on monitoring engine gas generator deterioration. Effectiveness of estimating the turbine blade and vane life exhaustion which was mainly developed by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft is also mentioned.
